The utmost importance has forced me to write you this letter. I cannot tell you my name because I could severely pay for the secrets I am going to tell you. I was advised to write to you by the Dean of St. Veronica Cathedral, Father Carlos, who is honored to be your friend.

Despite my profession of astrophysics, I have always been a devout son of our Holy Church. My duty to God and his people compels me to tell you what I learned while working in an astrophysics complex here in the desert highlands of Atacama in Chile.

During the last several weeks we have been monitoring a strange object in space, which is approaching the Sun from the area of the Taurus constellation. It has a spherical-like shape and its size is several kilometers wide. It is now forty billion kilometers from Earth, roughly six times further than Pluto. The object's speed is 60,000 kilometers per second but slowly decreasing. This leads us to think that the object has an artificial origin. In other words, it may be a giant space craft. And something else about it troubles me.

Yesterday we recorded a radio transmission coming from the object. It was broadcasted on a 21-centimeter wavelength. Let me explain why this is important. As you know, mankind has been trying to establish communication with extraterrestrial intelligence for a long time. At one time I doubted the idea. The SETI program has been sending radio signals with a wavelength of 21 centimeters. This corresponds to the wavelength of hydrogen radiation. Since hydrogen is the most common element in nature, we felt that extraterrestrials would monitor radio waves in this range. This type of transmission cannot be anything other than a response from extraterrestrial intelligence to someone of Earth. In other words, someone from Earth has entered into secret contact with extraterrestrials. We are trying to decrypt the transmission and we are sure we will succeed in this.

Our movement is monitored by the intelligence service and by sending you this letter I am taking a huge risk. But what is my life when all of mankind could be threatened with annihilation! I will try to continue informing you about this unknown space object. You can reply to me through this anonymous address or via Father Carlos, who has my infinite trust.
