Hand-written by First Class Private Phil O'Raily

June 7, 2032

My name is Phil O'Raily, First Class Private in the U.S.A. Air Force. I'm 22 years old. My parents live in Bangor, Maine. My colleagues and I were ordered to secure the object "Zeus-55" in Nevada. Today is June 7, 2032 and the time is near midnight. It might already be the 8th of June. I don't know the exact time as my watches have stopped.

I'm now in the west tunnel of Zeus. But if you are reading this note, it means you found my body here. You need to go further into the tunnel because there could be some people alive! All electronics are out of order and it's not possible to open the vents from the inside. I'm going to try to push them from the outside and free the people. I’m standing in front of a tunnel with a rusty ladder inside that goes down 1,300 feet. I can either go the speed of a turtle or the speed of a rock falling. As we used to say in the Air Force, “you don’t die from falling; you die from hitting the ground.”

The people above died from a different cause. Those deep under the ground had a chance to survive and I'm one of them. My curiosity had saved me. Three days ago, internal security was rearranged by people I had never seen. As far as I understood, they were from the CIA. May they rest in peace. We soldiers were given a week's vacation. My buddy Jack Logan said it could be related to some test were weren’t supposed to know about. It was gonna be reviewed by some bigwigs we weren't allowed to meet.

The scientists had been on edge the whole week. One of them, Norris, fumed and trudged around like my Uncle Bruce's horse. He even stopped arguing with Chariskiy about who was the first to invent this nonsense they are all working on, whether it was Serbian Tesla or Russian Filippov. Chariskiy looks like a Russian, but we all trust him. Chariskiy didn't want us to go home when we were first released. "You should probably investigate it," he said. "Investigate what?" I asked. "How the future will be made," he replied.

The eggheads always pull the wool over our eyes. I had been listening in on a lot of other conversations and thought that the secret testing might be related to transferring something over a long distance, either objects or energy. Chariskiy had convinced me to try to look at it. I bet Logan 100 bucks that I'd see how the future would be made. It didn't take much time to prepare. I threw some combat rations in my backpack with some water and a flask of Jack Daniels. I climbed into the container carrier that ran between the external perimeter and the testing tunnels. Last night it was transferring goods to the west tunnel. Engineers from Norris's team were going the same way.

The transport platform had always run to the west tunnel, but for some reason it stopped at the Northern tunnel. As I wondered what was happening, the container was unloaded and all of the workers got on the platform. I decided to wait for the next transport, but it never came.

My mom always told me that my foolishness would get me in trouble. She was mistaken. Now I realize that my foolishness saved my life. The experiment was none of my business but in my haste to see it I ended up safe in the northern tunnel. When the light switched off and the ventilation stopped, I knew there was something wrong. I had heard about blackouts in New York, when people got locked in a subway and injured because of panic. The northern tunnel was quiet. When I'm alone, I never panic. I am too foolish. As other soldiers used to say, "If you don't panic, you must not know the whole situation."

Before I left the northern tunnel, I took a few sips from my flask for courage. It’s not for nothing that I dragged it with me. If you are reading this, you know how it looks up there. Above ground I saw their bodies; Norris and Chariskiy. They lay side by side in front of a main console with a dozen bodies surrounding them. There was no one to rescue and communication with the outer world was totally gone. There remains a chance that I will find people alive here in the western tunnel.

So, I'm going inside…
